It Can Happen to Anyone: Minnesota Wild Unprepared

NHL hockey team, the Minnesota Wild were left unprepared after a fire destroyed a good part of the players’ equipment.  Their goalie was left to new pads and a charred glove.  Players remarked how the unfamiliar requipment really affected their play, as they had travelled to Ottawa for a game they lost 4-1.  In another case of it can happen to anyone, it gives a great case study on how a lack of preparation can affect anybody.  The NHL refused to suspend the game.  The trainers had to go back to Minnesota to get more equipment and tried they best but react as they would, the players didn’t play up to par and lost, rattled and in barely broken-in equipment.  Business Continuity/Player Continuity– a failure to plan, a failure on the ice.  Was it such a big deal?!  It was only a game, right?  The players would tend to disagree and the fans in Ottawa thank you.

“Is That Really Software-as-a-Service?” Red Flags to Determine True SaaS from Pretender SaaS

There has been a lot of buzz about Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) in the BCP world. But it’s extremely important for BC professionals to understand: What exactly is true SaaS – and what is buzzword marketing?

SaaS is software that’s subscription-based and hosted within the vendor’s secure IT environment. The primary purpose of a SaaS model is to release you and your organization from the hefty cost and time overhead associated with traditional software, allowing you to start using your software for its primary business purpose as soon as possible.

The principle of a true SaaS model is simple: YOU have no responsibility for anything IT-related. YOUR VENDOR absorbs all the time, responsibilities, and costs for all of the IT hardware and services related to running the software.

Some BCP vendors do not adhere to this principle. Here are some red flags to help you find the SaaS “pretenders.”

The H1N1 Scare?

Many people have been telling me that H1N1 is nothing to worry about.  A consumer reports survey only had about 1/3 of people polled who intended to get themselves vaccinated and about the same for their children. I fully intend to get the vaccine first for my children and next for myself.  I am in disbelief at the distrust in the vaccine in the general population. I just hope the tide turns soon and people wise up.

Live from DRJ – The Attendees Are Fed Up

As I wrap up here in San Diego, I wanted reflect on DRJ’s Fall World 2009.  It wasn’t hard to see that less people attended than previous years. It wasn’t surprising, with the lack of travel budgets and the state of the economy. The event had many of the same faces from the industry.  But I detected a pervasive feeling of angst and frustration that I have not seen at other events this year. People are frustrated – many at being out of work, others  at being faced with management that doesn’t recognize their true value to their organizations, and many at being locked into undesirable job situations that have a common theme: a lack of support resources and dollars to do their jobs.

The economy has put our profession under a tough magnifying glass where BCP as cost centers, mass document generation, and expensive solutions with little return are no longer passing muster. It’s a frustrating time, but also presents a unique opportunity to force us to be better – more than just document planners, but professionals who understand the inner workings of our operations and can put the pieces back together during the worst of times.  Now more than ever we must be creative – there are those that will pray for the status quo and try to skate by to the end, but as Business Continuity Professionals we are much better than that – let’s not wither away, but prosper as a profession by continuing to make ourselves better – by making our organizations better.
