Business Continuity Programs are Starting To Crop Up All Across The Country
Mommy, I Want To Be a Business Continuity Planner!
You can’t just wing it anymore. Many things have changed since you first said you wanted to become a fireman, an astronaut, a veterinarian or a nun. This is especially true in the field of business continuity.
Business continuity is not just concerned with IT recovery anymore. Supply chain management is critical to sustaining company operations. How do we determine what is or isn’t critical? Shouldn’t we bring these issues to the attention of our C-Level management?
These are just some of the issues confronting BCP Managers and most practitioners today had to learn how to handle these things along the way. As time goes by, trying to cover all bases regarding continuity has become more and more complicated. Instead of learning while working the job, a little bit of education to start would go a long way to getting ahead of what needs to be done.
Thankfully, the education community has realized how important this is and business continuity programs are starting to crop up in bachelor studies — and even MS programs — to provide students with the important skills to keep businesses alive. Perhaps an increase in Daddy business continuity planners prompted these programs?
Hardly! According to Tracey Linnell, General Manager of Advisory Services at ContinuitySA, in an article by Fay Humphries: "There is definitely a skills shortage in the business continuity management (BCM) space".
She goes on to add: "The skills requirement of a BCM consultant or manager are diverse and require an individual that is able to, among other things, engage with senior management and executives, run simple and complex projects, facilitate workshop sessions, analyze business processes, and write reports."
Hopefully, the number of graduating students from our universities will fill the void and increase the level of expertise in our profession because it’s clear that there is a need. These graduates will hit the ground running and will be able to address the issues mentioned at the beginning of this article.
